On a bitterly cold Christchurch night, Breckon Graduates made sure to deliver the heat on the Addington Raceway track.
Regal Attire set the track alight with a hot win from the 2600m stand in a time of 3.18.7. Expertly handled by Natalie Rasmussen, he clocked up win number one of five for the night for the world-class reins woman.
Another win in that tally came via the Breckon Syndicate raced filly Bettor Twist. The “Breckon Beauty” as coined by race caller Matthew Cross, or Big Bird as we know her, has firmly cemented her place as NZ’s top 3YO filly.
Having to overcome a tricky draw she made easy work of the 1980m event. She secured Group 1 number four in the process and will be hunting for back to back group 1’s next week when she lines up in The Breeders NZ Oaks.
Earlier in the evening Pace N Pride added to his consistent formline with a gallant second behind stablemate Shan Noble.
Addington played host to the final night of the NZB Standardbred 2YO Harness Millions finals where the farm was represented by six Karaka graduates.
After a win in Auckland by Cover Girl on Thursday night in the 2YO fillies final the pressure was on the Christchurch boys, and they didn’t disappoint.
Wy Fi ran a career best race to secure a second placing behind gun juvenile Highgrove in the Trot. Cosmic Major and Willow Bay secured 2nd and 4th respectively from their horror draws and lost no admirers in the 2YO colts and geldings pacing final.
The team will all line up again next week with the Group 1 NZ Oaks for Bettor Twist and Group 1 2YO C & G Sires Stakes Final for Cosmic Major and Willow Bay headlining the race night.
We’ll have a fingers and toes crossed on Tuesday for some kinder draws and look forward to experiencing another Friday night of great Southern Hospitality at HQ.
