It was a proud night for the Breckon Farms team with a fairytale result in the Group 1 Breckon Farms Northern Trotting Derby - and a little bit of history made along the way.
Meant To Be (Father Patrick) claimed victory in a thrilling finish, defeating stablemate Higher Power (Father Patrick) by the narrowest of margins, to deliver a Breckon-bred quinella in the $100,000 feature.
Both talented three-year-olds are prepared by champion trainers Barry Purdon and Scott Phelan, who have long maintained that there is little between the pair. The Derby finish certainly proved them right, with 0.1 lengths separating Meant To Be and Higher Power at the post.
The result also carried extra significance, with Meant To Be emulating the deeds of his outstanding mother, Luby Lou, who won the Group 1 Trotting Derby herself. Their win sees them become just the second mother-son duo to both capture the time-honoured classic, joining Escapee and Winterfell.
Congratulations to all the winning connections. A night to remember for Breckon Farms!
