Purchased from long term friends, Sandy & Jan Yarndley, Yarndley Farms was renamed Breckon Farms in 2007.
Ken Breckon has been passionate about harness racing almost all of his life. His father George, and grandfather Joe Bowyer were racing men.
Ken found himself actively involved in the Harness Racing industry in 1995, when he and his late brother Peter set off to Karaka to purchase their first racehorse. The day prior to the sales they read an article in the Herald by Leo George, stating that Megaera would be the filly to buy at Karaka, and decided buying a racehorse would be a good relief from the pressures of work. Megaerawould be the first of many champion horses to be associated with the Breckon name.
Karen like her husband, is deeply passionate about harness racing, with the husband and wife duo committing many hours to administration of the industry through Club and kindred body committees.
Their success as owners of the now retired champion trotter I Can Doosit thrust them into the spotlight as prominent owners and breeders. The million-dollar trotter lives out his days at Breckon Farms and his worldclass bloodlines live on through the progeny of his sisters.
Ken & Karen’s vision for the farm and the industry is second to none. They constantly strive to raise the bar on and off the track, and the commitment to their vision is paying dividends.
Ken and Karen accepted the title of New Zealand Breeder of the Year in 2021, they've bred New Zealand Pacing Horse of the Year, Bettor Twist, and Australasian Horse of the Year, King of Swing and have won over 20 Group 1's with their Breckon Farms Syndicates.
Investment in quality broodmares and proven performers is reaping rewards in the sales ring with Breckon Farms once again finishing as the leading vendor by aggregate at the 2026 NZB Yearling Sales. In total, Breckon Farms achieved eight $100,000-plus yearlings from a draft of 35 horses. Highlight results included Lot 16, a superb Sweet Lou x Rocknroll Roulette filly, who sold for $190,000 to Charles Joseph, and Lot 96 - the Sweet Lou x Enjoy Me colt, who realised $170,000 when secured by Barry Purdon & Scott Phelan Racing Stables.
